Movement sensors such as accelerometers and magnetometers are being used increasingly in tags to infer animal behaviour. These sensors can provide remarkable detail about the posture and movements of animals as a function of time but are not always easy to interpret. Here we provide some information on these sensors, how to use them and some caveats. We also provide a set of tools for working with movement data in Matlab.
Download here a tutorial on fine-scale motion sensing.
The DTAG toolbox for Matlab is here: tagmatlab_20aug14. This contains functions for analysing movement and sound data from DTAGs although many of the functions can be applied to other tags as well. Additional Matlab tools are needed for the latest version of the DTAG and these can be found on the DTAG-3 page.
