For my masters thesis I will be using Dtag acoustic recordings from two populations of long finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) in the Alboran Sea and Tarifa (Spain).  I will be classifying their calls and comparing the similarities between different groups within and between populations.  My methods will involve human judgement, as the current marine mammal masters students will be asked to compare and match images of similar calls types.  Results may help to inform the functionality of these vocalizations and whether they are used in a social context.  This will be done under the supervision of Professor Peter Tyack.
